CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Saturday marks the 40th anniversary of the Flight 191 crash - the nation’s deadliest airplane disaster, not related to terrorism, just outside of O’Hare International Airport in Chicago.
On May 25, 1979, American Airlines Flight 191 from O'Hare to LAX crashed just 31 seconds after takeoff. All 271 people on board were killed, including a crew of 13. Two others on the ground were also killed.

The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 lost its left engine and the plane came crashing down.
A memorial to Flight 191 was installed near the site within the past decade by local school children.
On Saturday, May 25, friends and family of the victims who died in the crash will meet at the Flight 191 memorial wall in Lake Park in Des Plaines. The service will begin at 2:30 p.m., with a reading of the victims’ names and a moment of silence at 3:04 p.m. — the exact time of the crash.
