The Washington Redskins have an interest in Stanford's David Shaw to be their next head coach, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.
Citing a pair of sources with knowledge of the situation, La Canfora
reported the Redskins are interested in the college coach, who has an 86-34 record with the Cardinal in nine seasons. Of course, there is a connection with Redskins team president
Bruce Allen, who according to La Canfora's sources said, "is a big proponent of Shaw's."
However, Allen's position with the team is not seen as secure as it once was. A
report from the NFL Network after Thanksgiving said "everything is up for evaluation in Washington" and that includes Allen's future with the team. La Canfora reported Sunday sources have indicated Washington owner
Daniel Snyder "is beginning to understand the gravity of his situation and that major changes could be coming to the Skins front office this week."
After the Redskins 20-15
defeat to the Packers, 106.7 The Fan's Chris Russell said, "I keep hearing that there's no chance Bruce Allen is coming back." Russell added it is just a matter of how that may be done, either the longtime president resigns, retire, or he is dismissed by ownership.
"I've now been told that things could happen this week," Russell said Sunday, indicating that would likely mean either resignation or firing.
This week longtime NFL reporter John Clayton
told 106.7 The Fan he thinks Snyder "might go a different direction" and move on from Allen. And on Friday, SI's Albert Breer told
Grant & Danny, Allen's job security will be linked to the head coach search and the team president could be a reason some prospective coaches are not interested in taking the job.
"The Redskins have already started the search," Breer
told 106.7 The Fan. "And my understanding is they've gotten some pushback on the current structure of the organization from some of those candidates."
La Canfora previously reported
Snyder's interest and admiration for Hampton, Virginia-native and Pittsburgh Steelers head coach
Mike Tomlin. However, since that report, the Steelers have performed spectacularly considering their quarterbacking situation, which would make Tomlin's availability highly unlikely. Tomlin also brushed away any possibility of him leaving Pittsburgh at the time.
The Redskins, who
fired Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start, and the Carolina Panthers, who fired Ron Rivera last week, are the only two sides to have dismissed their top man this season. Of course, Rivera could be
another option for the Redskins to consider.
However, there could be a glut of jobs available this offseason with many making a run at Shaw. The Dallas Cowboys, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, the Cleveland Browns, and possibly the New York Jets could all make changes.
