AUSTIN (Talk1370.com) -- A suspect was shot and killed by police Wednesday evening during a hostage situation on the city's east side.

According to Austin Police Chief Brian Manley, the incident began in the 2900 block of Rogge Lane around 5:20 p.m. Wednesday when a car reportedly crashed into a home.

A few minutes later, a 911 call came in from a woman at a different home saying that someone had broken in.

When officers arrived on the scene, they heard a disturbance and forced entry around 5:30 p.m. They encountered the suspect, who fired at officers, causing them to return fire. It's unknown if those initial shots injured the suspect, Manley said.

The suspect then barricaded himself inside the home, holding the woman and a young boy hostage. At that point, SWAT was called in to attempt to make contact with the suspect.

At 6:17 p.m., Manley said, the suspect came to the door, holding the child in a "hostage-like" position. A SWAT officer shot the suspect, who was pronounced deceased on the scene. The woman and child were safely rescued and given medical attention.

Manley said the suspect is a 21-year old male, with no known connection to the victims or the home that he broke into.

Both officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of investigations into the shootings, which is standard procedure for any officer-involved shooting. Manley said the first officer has been with APD for eight years, while the SWAT officer is a 13-year veteran of the department.
