The Mets' broadcast booth took aim at home-plate umpire Angel Hernandez on Wednesday night -- for a horrendous call that actually helped the Amazin's.
The embattled veteran ump came under scrutiny when he rung up Marlins slugger Brian Anderson on a pitch from reliever Trevor May that looked to be several inches off the plate -- both outside and perhaps low -- leading off the bottom of the ninth inning in a two-run game.
Anderson vehemently objected to the call, but to no avail.
Even SNY announcer Gary Cohen and analyst Ron Darling were shocked by the bad call.
"Anderson protests, and you can understand why," Cohen remarked.
"Well, it's not an official game until Angel plays a big part in it," Darling responded.
"Angel. Devil. Boy, that's a tough one to call," Cohen said. "Wow, the Mets got a break. That's two baseballs outside."
In fairness to Hernandez, he got it right on a tricky call at the plate in the top of the second inning, when he ruled Javier Baez safe on a nifty swim move to avoid the tag of Marlins catcher Alex Jackson.
But overall, it hasn't been a good season for Hernandez, who has been involved in several bad or botched calls, including two on consecutive nights in an Indians-Royals series in Kansas City in May.
