A new, post-draft power rankings on NFL.com has the Commanders 30th in the league, behind only the lowly Texans and Cardinals, two teams that are widely expected to go nowhere in the upcoming season.
The ranking was a little too harsh in the eyes of BMitch and Finlay, but it did open their eyes to a potentially sobering reality.
“It’s hard to play defense that well in back-to-back years,” BMitch said. “Will the offense be that much better?”
“Will it be worse?” Finlay replied. “We do all operate on this theory that it has to be better. I think we have to allow for some wiggle room that it could be worse. It’s a really ugly thought to have.”
Ultimately, both believe that Washington will be better than a bottom three team in the NFL, but if the argument is that they won’t be too much better, then the season may already have a bleak outlook.
“I think that’s too low,” Finlay said. “I think the defense is better than a 30th ranking, but damn. If you’re arguing about 25 or 30, you’re not arguing about the playoffs.”
