After seeing the Commanders’ strategy in the NFL Draft, Finlay says one thing is clear.
Washington either really believes in their inexperienced starting quarterback, or they have no idea what he might be in for.
“They’re either really confident in Sam Howell,” Finlay said. “Or really naïve about how hard it is going to be for a guy with 11 career completions running this thing.”
Many expected the Commanders to use their early-round picks on offensive linemen to help protect Howell, but instead, Washington took two defensive backs before addressing the line with lower level prospects in rounds three and four. Still, BMitch believes Eric Bieniemy’s system, coming from the Andy Reid coaching tree, will help Howell find success.
“Just get the ball into the hands of the playmakers,” BMitch said. “Andy Reid had Alex Smith, Donovan McNabb, Jeff Garcia, he made all of these people successful. The job is read, know what you’re dealing with, and get the ball out of your hands. If Sam Howell can do that to an above-average success rate, I think the team can be good with all the talent around him.”
