Emmanuel Forbes has apparently been killing it at OTAs so far, which Grant Paulsen mentioned briefly at the end of a shortened Grant & Danny today:
“Real quick I wanted to get this is: did you see all the guys out at practice raving about him today?” Grant asked. “Pass breakups, picks, jumping routes – apparently he’s just been cerebral where if you get him on something, and you try to do it again a few plays later, he sees it and jumps it.”
It’s only May, and these are only OTAs, so Grant isn’t catching Ashburn Syndrome (perhaps from JP Finlay) – but for a rookie, this is incredible progress, even considering he’s a first-rounder.
“I won’t get overexcited, but there’s something to be said for flashing right away, and he is showing up at these workouts,” Grant said.
“The alternative is way worse and alarming,” Danny replied. “This is, ‘oh nice, he has a skill set, he belongs in the league and will be an asset.’ How good he will be is a huge variable at this point, wondering if he’ll hold up for 17 weeks, because you know he’s going get attacked, but teams will try to figure out what you are. It sounds cute that at 165 pounds, you can step up and make tackles in the running game – but can you do it five times, or in December?”
That said – so far, so good.
“The thing that will stand out is the supercomputer he has, where he knows he is confident enough he can now jump this route and make this play,” Danny said. “That turnover thing is going to be worth the price that they paid.”
