Dan Snyder never would’ve even deigned to join Joe Buck & Troy Aikman in the booth, let alone have an awkward moment on camera trying to give Joe Buck a handshake that wasn’t offered – so that moment from Josh Harris Monday night brought another level to the humanity of the Commanders ownership we haven’t seen in years.
Grant & Danny, for two, absolutely loved it, even if ESPN didn’t do Harris any favors with the interview as is.
“The awkward shake was hilarious, and everything about that interview was comical and wonderful. I’d say they put him in a bad spot – in the middle of the game, a guy who doesn’t do a lot of interviews in between two people, looking right and left and panics and grabs a hand, and it was awkward – but that was MY awkward billionaire!” Grant said. “It feels good to have our guy do something awkward on TV, instead of seeing Dan Snyder and cringing and wanting to punch your TV.”
Danny referenced the Commanders’ social media team doing a bit on the moment, something else you’d never see in the old days, as it was a moment anyone could see themselves in.
“If you need a better example of how much of a new era this is, that a guy who is on the hook for six billion dollars is able to do that? Think about six months ago, where it was, ‘you have to call him Mr. Snyder and can’t look him in the eyes,’ like he’s a rabid animal. Now they’re doing a bit about the awkward handshake – how often have any of us been awkward and oblivious and been the butt of the joke? You lean into it and have fun!”
Grant agreed, and went back to how Harris was ‘set up to fail’ by ESPN in that moment, but it became a moment of levity that was ‘adorable and precious.’
“It is very awkward when, in-game, you are being interviewed by someone. The action is the star, you have two people talking to you, then you add the element of the camera and what to do – he was set up to fail in that moment, and it was a bad idea,” Grant said. “But, who cares? It was a funny thing, the handshake went viral, and it was adorable and precious. That’s my little owner and hero, Josh Harris, thank you for saving the day.”
