Talk about a Friday news dump bombshell: we found out just before quittin’ time for last week that Dan Snyder had agreed to the deal with the Josh Harris group to sell the Commanders, subject to approval of the NFL – possibly at next week’s owners’ meetings in Minneapolis.
The penultimate step, it seems, to the official official end of the Dan Snyder era, and one that Cakes believes is the formality on the icing on the cake.
“I wish I could go to BetMGM and they had some sort of line on whether the owners would vote this through or not,” Cakes said. “I would wager everything I own, and get loans from all of you, to place the wager on it.”
EB’s not sold, though, that it will happen next week…nor was he particularly plussed (is that the opposite of non-plussed?) by the news as many were.
“I don’t want to be a Debbie Downer, but to me, it was a non-story story?” EB asked. “He already agreed to sell – I guess he was open to other bids, but nothing really changed, so I think people were overreacting. I know there are a lot of paranoid people who thought he would pull the rug out or delay, but that story was the biggest non-story I’ve ever heard. I’m already out of all the euphoria. I did that. He’s selling the team, folks!”
“I think people were just celebrating the next step in the process, as it’s one step closer to Dan Snyder never ruining the franchise ever again,” Cakes shot back, with JP adding that “it’s just now more official that Snyder has accepted the deal.”
The guys discussed the messages thrown out by some of the limited partners, including Magic Johnson and Mark Ein, which is a good first step for that group in getting in the good graces of the fans.
“You want to aspire to that, if you’re owning the team, but it’s going to take a lot of work to get back to the glory days,” Cakes said.
“Yeah, but the good graces of the public will happen overnight,” EB shot back. “The public is excited.”
The guys agree that the first thing that will come once new owners take over will be new stadium discussion. Apparently, Magic Johnson has already met with Maryland governor Wes Moore, who seems to want to keep the stadium in Prince George’s County, but there could be a bidding war?
“I’m sure now that Dan Snyder is removed from the picture, all three municipalities will be hot and heavy to get the stadium built there,” Cakes said. “All the inaction you saw with Dan Snyder in charge? That is going to be flipped with the quickness, because everyone wants the economic driver.
It all depends on how much public money they’re going to want – if they can finance most of it on their own, then I think everyone is going to be after it.”
“They’ll have plenty of bidders, but I don’t even care where they put it,” EB said. “In a perfect world you’d want to have it at the old site, but just don’t put it in Ashburn or somewhere an hour away. If you want to put it at the old site, or over by MGM, fine.”
And for all those who are excited that the Sixers and Devils both made the conference semifinals this year, hopefully a sign of things to come for the Commanders under Josh Harris?
“I don’t know what that means, but I think he’ll be a competent owner, and he’s largely stayed away from major controversies,” EB said. “I think he’ll be just fine as long as he hands over the reins to competent people – we’ll be just like everyone else, which is all we can ask.”
Added Cakes: “Just have a boring owner who doesn’t make huge headlines all the time for all the wrong reasons – I think that’s all Commanders fans are really hoping for!”
