JP Finlay feels the widespread anticipation from Commanders fans to get a look at Sam Howell, despite many experts not expecting much from the former fifth-round pick.

Why the buzz around DC over Howell? Finlay says it’s because the fanbase is happy just to have a change of pace at the quarterback position, finally getting to take a look at a youngster with some room to improve, and not another quarterback whose best days are behind him.

“There is such veteran quarterback fatigue, I’m talking specifically Washington fans,” Finlay said. “Alex [Smith] looked like he could win…but it started with Robert [Griffin III] and Kirk. That was polarizing. There are still people who think Robert could start. That was really the beginning of the demise for a lot of fans….then you go on this carousel of veteran quarterbacks who don’t get it done. Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, Josh Johnson, Mark Sanchez. Fitz, Heinicke, Wentz, just disaster after disaster.

“We always grabbed the fringe guys…they already started their downhill.”

So, while Howell isn’t a prized draft pick with sky-high expectations, the mere scent of potential for a quarterback with possible room to grow is something new and exciting for the fanbase.

“Howell is a breath of fresh air,” Finlay said. “Young, humble, no marketing campaign, no personal logo from what I can tell…I, like many, am intrigued, and excited to see Sam Howell. I don’t know what’s gonna happen, but I’m excited to find out. I think for Commanders fans, they feel the same way.”
