ESPN’s Mike Clay put out his ranking of NFL wide receiver groups on Monday, and the Commanders rank 11th out of 32 – perhaps one of the few rankings they will be in the top third of (their QBs are ranked No.
32, for instance, in Tuesday’s release).
On Tuesday’s show, the Junkies discussed the entire list (Cincinnati is No. 1), and at least a couple Junkies believe the Commanders’ ranking is pretty good.
“I think that’s a pretty good ranking for the Commanders at No. 11,” Cakes said. “I think that’s fair, that’s not outrageous.”
“Not everyone sees them as a Top 10 unit and he has them at 11, kind of the same to me,” EB replied. “Not sure where they should rank, but it’s a little better than I thought, I expected you to say somewhere in the 20s. I’ll go with that.”
The thing is, some of the teams in the Top 10 may not have the level of solid depth the Commanders could have, but the tops of their depth charts are ‘on another level.’
“If you look at the top teams, especially their top two, they’re just another level above,” JP added. “The Cowboys may be ranked a little high (No. 5) though, given Brandin Cooks has been on like 100 teams.”
“I think he has some of those teams ranked ahead because their No. 1 is so much better than anyone on the Commanders,” Bish replied, mentioning CeeDee Lamb and the Raiders with Davante Adams at No. 9.
“I’m fine with it. I don’t need to think we have the best receivers in the league. If we’re in the top third, I have no quibbles with it – they have Stefon Diggs and those guys 20th!” EB shot back.
That’s surely because of the lack of depth in Buffalo, as Diggs is an elite receiver – but when it comes to the Commanders, is theirs really that good?
“Is the depth at receiver good enough?” JP said. “I believe Dotson should be No. 2, because Samuel has injury issues. Do you mind the other receivers - Dyami Brown, Dax Milne, and Marcus Kemp? This is one of the strengths of the team, but is it as good as we think?”
“Dotson showed you in his rookie campaign that he should be the No. 2,” Cakes replied. “And I think Samuel may be used better by Eric Bieniemy than he was by Scott Turner; he’s been a disappointment, but if he’s more involved, he’s a really good third wideout, and you can sprinkle him in the backfield.”
The producers then chimed in saying this ranking might be low for some Commanders fans all things considered, but “Curtis Samuel has been a bust here.”
“If you just ranked top receivers, or top two, or top three, it would all be different,” EB fired back, and Bish had a great response: “If you think the Commanders’ top three receivers are the best in the league, you fell out of bed and hit your head really hard.”
The guys then went into debate on those notions - listen to the whole conversation above!
