The Dwayne Haskins era in the nation's capital came to an end Monday when the team announced that it had waived the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft after less than two seasons with the franchise.
"This afternoon I met with Dwayne and informed him that we would be releasing him. I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions these last two seasons and wish him well moving forward," Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement.
Haskins' release comes after a disappointing loss to the Carolina Panthers in a Week 16 home game that could have helped the WFT clinch the NFC East.
Haskins started for a second-straight week despite losing his role as a team captain and being fined $40,000 by the organization for violating team COVID-19 protocols after being photographed at a birthday party for his girlfriend following the team's loss to Seattle in Week 15.
The news has quickly picked up traction on Twitter:
Former Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III wished Haskins the best of luck on his future endeavors. Griffin, who was the most recent quarterback selected by the franchise in the first round by Washington before Haskins, has since moved on from D.C. after several injury-plagued seasons.
ESPN Insider Field Yates included a harrowing statistic about Haskins' ability to complete throws of more than ten yards.
Even while on vacation, Stephen A. Smith chimed in to give his take on the failed experiment in Washington and says Haskins' career is "officially in grave jeopardy."
UPDATE: Haskins, who set his Twitter account to private after last week's COVID-19 protocol violation, put out a statement Monday afternoon, thanking the Washington Football Team for the opportunity and vowing to become a "better man and player because of this experience."
