The Washington Football Team has been through a carousel of quarterbacks this year, but with the NFC East title on the line, they appear to be getting back their most consistent performer.

According to ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio, Washington head coach Ron Rivera said that quarterback Alex Smith has been cleared to play against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

“Alex had two good days and then went through the walk-through before we left for Philadelphia, saw the doctor, and she said he’s ready to go,” Rivera told Paolantonio.

Smith’s injured calf will be reassessed before game time, but the team expects he will start and play the full game.

Washington, which has lost its last two games with Dwayne Haskins as the starting quarterback, needs to beat the Eagles to clinch the NFC East title.

While Smith practiced back-to-back days this week for the first time since his injury, Washington’s contingency plan would have been to start Taylor Heinicke, who replaced Haskins for performance reasons in last week’s loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Haskins, a 2019 first-round pick, was released by Washington on Monday after a tumultuous two seasons that culminated in his struggles on the field following a violation of COVID-19 protocols.

Heinicke, who completed 12 of 19 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown last week, will be the backup quarterback if Smith starts.
