The Upstate has a rich history when it comes to pro wrestling. Greenville Memorial Auditorium was a regular stop for NWA Mid Atlantic in the 70's and 80's. Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium also has had it shares of wrestling action and wild brawls.
Boiling Springs has quietly been taking up that banner in recent years. They will do just that again and in a major way coming up this weekend.
Former WWE Star Ken Kennedy is set to make a rare appearance in the Carolina to headline the card. Kennedy worked for the WWE from 2005 through 2009, while there he won the U.S. Title. After that he worked for TNA Wrestling for several years and since has worked for various independent promotions and made appearances for the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA)
Kennedy is slated to face off with Alexander Hammerstone on Saturday night in Boiling Springs. "Hammer" has a unique combination that you don't see very often in Pro Wrestling these days. He's jacked physically, has size and is incredibly agile for a guy his size. Hammer is a former World Champ in Major League Wrestling and has worked all over the world. In recent years, he's also competed for the NWA and TNA.
While the advertised Main Event is worth the price of admission there's plenty more on and around the card for the evening. 2nd Generation wrestling star Kerry Morton will be in the Upstate to take on local phenom Luke Fury. That match features two of the up and coming young wrestlers in the Southeast. Morton is the son of the legend Ricky Morton and has been featured on the NWA's weekly TV program for the last few years. However, he's only 24 years old.
Fury is a regular performing in Boiling Springs and everyone around the industry has raved about the young man. He's considered by some to be a prodigy. While both men are young guys, Morton will have the experience factor on his side. As someone who has watched pro wrestling since the late 80's, I will say Kerry Morton is one of the best in-ring performers in the business right now. This has match of the night written all over it.
Also set for action Saturday night include the brother tandem of the Country Gentleman. A,J. and K.C. Cazana come from a family with ties to pro wrestling that go back decades. Both also played college football, A.J. was an Offensive Lineman at the University of Tennessee. K.C. was a member of Tusculum's DII National Title team back a few years ago. They also have held the NWA U.S. Tag Titles together.
Former WWE talent Mike Mondo has had a resurgence in his career. He's set to be in action Saturday night, as well. Mondo was saddled with an awful "gimmick" in WWE as part of the "Spirit Squad". However, he's always been considered immensely talented by those around the industry. He's been appearing on NWA Power regularly this year and in the past also worked Ring Of Honor Wrestling.
Some pro wrestling legends will also be on hand for the event. The "Powers Of Pain" are billed to be in Boiling Springs. Warlord and Barbarian had tremendous runs as tag teams partners both in NWA Mid-Atlantic and WWF in the late 80's. They both also had singles runs in WWF in the early 90's. Barbarian worked for WCW in the late 90's as well teaming with Meng to form the "Faces Of Fear".
Last but certainly not least, WWE Hall Of Famer Leilani Kai is set to make a very rare appearance in the Carolinas, this weekend. She's a former Women's Champ in WWF. Kai also worked for various territories across the U.S. in the late 70's and 80's. She also made regular tours of Japan to compete.
If you're a wrestling fan Boiling Springs will be the place to be this Saturday night, September 6th. If you're not a wrestling fan or haven't seen a wrestling event live, go check it out. Wrestling translates different live and the atmosphere is something, that can't be explained just experienced.
