What was once thought to be a distant fairytale, The Great Eight's chase of Wayne Gretzky's hallowed record of 894 goals — the top of the mountain among all-time career goal scorers — now seems distinctly within reach.

These are the 10 goals Ovi scored in the Capitals' 18 games in February and March of 2023.
Career Goal Number: 813
Feb. 26 vs. Buffalo – After entering the second period tied at two, the game quickly got out of hand with the Sabres netting four consecutive goals before Ovechkin tickled the twine with his 33rd goal of the season off a big rebound off the boards to break a six-game scoring drought with helpers from Erik Gustafsson and Evgeny Kuznetsov.
Career Goal Number: 814, 815
March 4 vs. San Jose – Down 2-0 after 20 minutes the Capitals stormed back with four goals in the second. With a 5-3 lead in the third period, the Great 8 grabbed two goals the first assisted by Tom Wilson and Gabriel Carlsson and the second from Rasmus Sandin and Vincent Iorio, who got his first-ever NHL career point on Ovechkin's 815th career goal in Washingon's 8-3 win over the Sharks.
Career Goal Number: 816
March 6 vs. Los Angeles – Down 2-1 in the third period, Ovi scored his 36th goal on the 2022-23 campaign with a power play score from a very familiar spot helped by Sandin and Nicklas Backstrom. However, a pair of goals, with the latter being an empty netter, gave the Kings a 4-2 win.
Career Goal Number: 817
March 15 vs. Buffalo – Down 4-2 with under 10 to play in the third period, Trevor van Riemsdyk and Dylan Strome assisted Ovechkin for the goal that set up a Tom Wilson power play goal to force overtime in the Caps' eventual 5-4 shootout win.
Career Goal Number: 818, 819
March 19 vs. Minnesota – Ovechkin, one of the most prolific threats on the power play in the history of the sport, got the Capitals back in the game in the second period with his 38th on the season with Sandin helping out during the man advantage. His second of the night and 819th of his career also came on the power play with Wilson and Strome helping out to make it a 4-2 game. But The Wild defended home ice with a 5-3 win.
Career Goal Number: 820
March 21 vs. Columbus – Just over five minutes into the game, Ovechkin opened the scoring with his 40th on the season, his 13th season with 40 or more goals in 18 years passing Gretsky for the most 40-goal seasons in history, with Wilson and Strome assisting. The Capitals built a 3-0 first-period lead and were up 6-5 with a minute to play but fell in OT 7-6 to a Jack Roslovic winner.
Career Goal Number: 821
March 23 vs. Chicago – After opening the scoring in the loss, Ovechkin iced the cake of a 6-1 Capitals win over the Blackhawks with an unassisted effort after intercepting a pass in the Washington zone and scoring on a nifty backhand off the breakaway late in the third period.
Career Goal Number: 822
March 25 vs. Pittsburgh – The Caps found themselves down 3-0 to the hated Penguins 27 seconds into the third period. After Wilson got Washington's offense going, Ovechkin, on the power play and from that spot of his, scored for his fourth-straight game with John Carlson and Strome helping straight off the faceoff. The Caps leveled the score through Strome with under three minutes to play, but an unlucky giveaway gave Evgeni Malkin an unassisted game-winner with 80 seconds remaining.
