The deal for the Josh Harris-led group to buy the Washington Commanders from Dan Snyder is still not finalized, but Craig Hoffman asked Front Office Sports reporter AJ Perez a very important question on everybody's mind: "Just to be clear before I go any further and give anyone a heart attack, there's no anticipation at this point that this isn't going to go through, right? It's 'hey how do we get around this obtacle course?' Not 'hey do we need to quit this obstacle course?'"
"Exactly," Perez said. "There are even indications that the other owners, and maybe even Roger Goodell, they have championed this [atypical sales] process because Dan wasn't moving fast enough. That is a very serious possibility that, from one source. But this should not be going like this. Dan should have picked somebody by now. I mean, there's only one person to pick all the other fake money out there from Brian Davis to [Canadian billionaire Steve] Apostolopoulos to everyone else who wanted in even [Tillman] Frittata and [Jeff] Bezos... the only real bid has been Josh Harris. It's been [the case] for many, many a couple of months now at least. And everybody knows that."
Perez added that his sources are not indicating that the legal indemnification that Snyder may be requested of the NFL or from the Harris group is holding up the closing of the sale, but "there's something holding this up. And the one thing that could be the Mary Jo White report and when that's gonna be released. I'm hearing that may not be released for many more months, actually."
The sale was a topic when the NFL finance committee met Wednesday and Perez later reported that while there are not "any red flags in Harris’ agreement" to buy the franchise, a source said the "vetting process isn’t totally complete."
Perez told Hoffman that at the finance committee meeting, there were "a lot of lawyers involved" in the process and there are a lot of details involved in this process, and "the details could be holding it up."
A source told Perez about the process: “There’s just a lot to work through.”
