“We hope to have new ownership there before the season opens. That would be the goal. It’s not an impossibility, we could have a special meeting in July or something like that, but I know the Commissioner will continue to look into it. There’s still work to be done.”
Those were the words of Colts owner Jim Irsay, speaking about the pending sale of the Commanders at the NFL Owner’s Meetings on Monday – and the words that prompted Chris Russell to go into another rant about the state of the sale.
“There’s work to be done…and he mentioned a special meeting after July 4. We’ve talked about all of this, like mid-August being a sweet spot, assuming everything is worked out and buttoned up,” Russell said. “The goal is to get it finalized but there’s work to be done – so there’s no guarantees that as we are sitting on the eve of them hosting the Cardinals on the first Sunday of the season, that Josh Harris will be in charge yet. This stuff takes forever, and there are legitimate questions and issues. Anyone who says there’s nothing to see here or worry about…stop. It’ll get resolved, but with what modifications, and when? Right now, it ain’t done, and because it’s not, there is always a chance something can go awry. Not likely, but always a chance, so we have to keep that in mind.”
