JP Finlay revealed Dan Snyder’s attorney’s letter to Oversight Committee Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney on Monday morning, essentially reaffirming that the Commanders owner won’t be attending Wednesday’s hearing, even virtually, because of a scheduling conflict that has Snyder out of the country.
“We all can recognize that Dan saying ‘no’ is probably a farce,” Finlay said. “You can probably move stuff around. But the latest letter [from the committee] is such a joke. They sent a letter Friday night at 6:00. They demanded a response by 9:00 a.m. that is like the complete opposite of business hours.”
The committee indeed sent a letter late Friday urging Snyder to reconsider his refusal to testify virtually, which NFL commissioner Roger Goodell will do on Wednesday. Snyder’s attorney responded with a letter on Monday morning, which Finlay summed up in one quick sentence.
“Really classy and fancy words to say, ‘Go bleep yourself,’” Finlay said.
As for the actual content of the letter, Finlay understands Snyder’s attorney’s issues with not receiving documents and materials to prepare for the hearing, but as for not being able to because of a scheduling conflict, that reasoning doesn’t hold much weight.
“That is legitimate,” Finlay said. “What usually happens when people come before congress is that they know what is going to be presented, and their lawyers are briefed on this. Nobody on the planet would go to congress, swear under oath to testify, and not know at all. I think the date and saying you have a firm commitment out of the country, if Roger Goodell could make the time, Dan Snyder should make the time. I think if they just stuck to the due process stuff, it is more firm footing than ‘I can’t make it, I have to wash my hair.’”
“When I was a single man, girls used to turn me down on dates, and when they said they were going out of the country, I said ‘Yeah, alright.’”
Simply put, the letter is essentially a way of saying that despite the committee’s insistence to reconsider, Snyder will not be appearing on Wednesday.
“The whole letter is saying ‘We’re not coming, you guys are just messing with us for no reason,’” Finlay said.
