Kevin Sheehan was just going off-air Thursday when news broke that Dan Snyder was selling the Commanders to a group led by Josh Harris, so he didn’t get to expound much on the subject.
Not so Friday, as Sheehan went in-depth on his thoughts on the sale in his opening monologue.
“Well, it’s pretty much over; Dan Snyder is going to sell the team to Josh Harris, and if something leads to a different conclusion, it won’t mean Dan keeping the team,” Sheehan said to open Friday’s show. “Yesterday was the day we had long hoped for, but never thought we’d see.”
News of the sale, to Sheehan, was a “wow moment, one of the biggest moments in sports history in this city” – but also a big day for the NFL?
“It’s a big day for the league; we’re popping corks here, but Roger Goodell and the other owners are thrilled, too. A market that was a huge underperformer now has a chance to succeed, so there’s financial excitement in New York,” Sheehan said. “And, they don’t have to go down the path of trying to get him out via a vote, something they may not have had the stomach to do in the first place. This was the cleanest conclusion for everybody.”
And for now, the details of the sale are insignificant, because the biggest detail is that a sale is coming.
“Today is a day to celebrate getting our team back,” Sheehan said. “It’s a day we thought would never come. I was at the DC Touchdown Club Awards Dinner last night and there was palpable excitement over the news, and we hope Josh Harris will create something better and new…it will be hard for him to do worse. It’s not really about Josh Harris, it’s about no more Dan Snyder.”
Take a listen to Sheehan’s entire monologue above, including his reading of a poignant listener letter and waxing poetic on the good old days of the Redskins unifying DC!
