Kevin Sheehan breaks down a recent list that ranks Sam Howell dead last among NFL starting QBs

CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin put out a list ranking the 32 projected NFL starting quarterbacks in 2023…and unfortunately, Sam Howell ranked dead last.

Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Jalen Hurts were the top three, and Kevin Sheehan admitted on Friday’s show that he’s fine with the first two, but has questions about Hurts over guys like Justin Herbert and Josh Allen (who are fifth and fourth, respectively).

But did he have an issue with Howell, who has one game of NFL experience under his belt, being dead last behind a handful of rookies and guys with similar experience?

“It’s just a ranking, doesn’t mean anything,” Sheehan said.

Kevin read the full list and then the ranking’s scouting report on Howell, which concludes by noting he is “wholly untested” – and he agrees with that, which is why he’s not upset Howell was last…because even being bullish on him might not move him up that much.

“Who are you going to put him ahead of? The rookies that were drafted? No – if you had a choice, you’d take Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Anthony Richardson ahead of Howell,” Sheehan posited. “Desmond Ridder? I don’t know; he played more games, and they were kind of in the same category for me in the Draft last year. I don’t know how you can make a strong case to put him ahead of anybody.”

Producer Denton Day’s only question was how Jordan Love, who has played 10 games in relief of Aaron Rodgers over the last three years, was as high as he was (No. 24), but you can hear the full discussion above by skipping ahead to about 38 minutes into the clip!
