Former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon joined The Sports Junkies on Monday to talk about the outlook for the Commanders after the NFL Draft, and he is one of many who say Washington is taking a risk by putting its faith in Sam Howell next season.
“They’re rolling the dice here with Sam Howell,” Gannon said. “When you consider all the options, I’m certain they looked at every possibility. I think they just cam to the conclusion that the guy giving them the best chance moving forward, especially in 2023, is Sam Howell.”
Gannon sees some potential in Howell, but given the rest of the NFC East, it’s hard to see the team taking a leap without a big improvement at the position.
“I saw a lot of his games at North Carolina…he showed some flashes,” Gannon said. “He’s never gonna overwhelm you with his measurables…he’s never gonna be Patrick Mahomes or Aaron Rodgers, but we see a lot of improvement with quarterbacks from year one to year two, so that’s a good thing.
“But Washington right now has the worst quarterback situation in the division…and it’s towards the bottom of the pack overall in the league.”
With Howell getting the nod, Gannon says his performance could have a direct connection to Ron Rivera’s future with the team, given recent trends across the league.
“In the last two years, we’ve fired 14 head coaches,” Gannon said. “And the reason we’re firing them is these coaches don’t have the consistency or the production at the quarterback position.”
