With just over a month before the Washington Commanders start training camp, Sam Howell has "held serve all spring" in his battle to be Ron Rivera's starting quarterback in Week 1 when the team hosts the Arizona Cardinals, according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.

Breer added on Monday that Howell's lead over veteran Jacoby Brissett in "the Washington quarterback derby is significant." He added that the second-year passer has "consistently put a plus arm on display" and had "plenty of velocity on the ball" and did not appear to be behind in learning Eric Bieniemy's new offense.

One thing in Breer's report that caught the eye of Kevin Sheehan was a note that Bieniemy's new everyone has to prove themself all over again philosophy has "brought the best out in third-year receiver Dyami Brown."

Sheehan added that he asked during OTAs if there was any indication that Brown and Howell had any chemistry at North Carolina? And the answer was not necessarily. However, that appears to not have been much of an impact in the early goings of the preseason program.

"Dyami Brown's got some talent, man," Sheehan said. "He can run. He can fly. He can be a big-time deep threat. And let's not forget that this was a combination in college that really worked before that last year when [Brown] was gone and had been drafted by Washington."

Sheehan added that Brown was less of a factor when Taylor Heinicke was in at quarterback last year, and had success when there is a big arm in there – support for this was Carson Wentz and Brown hooking up for 105 yards on two catches for two touchdowns in Week 5 last season – and reports indicate Howell has that.
