Will Ron Rivera, Commanders be right about Sam Howell?

Ron Rivera and the Washington Commanders aren't putting all of their eggs in the Sam Howell basket, but the organization is putting a lot of their weight right now behind softening the ground for the former fifth-round draft pick to be the starting quarterback in Week 1.

Kevin Sheehan had this question for Commanders fans: Will Rivera be right that Howell will be the quarterback for the next five years in Washington? Have the Commanders found the franchise quarterback?

"I have no idea if they're going to be right about Sam Howell. But if you forced me to pick one or the other," Sheehan said, "I would say no they're not going to be right. There's a lot about Sam Howell that makes me believe he can play the position, but not at, necessarily, a franchise level. I hope I'm wrong."

And there is the possibility that Jacoby Birssett, who was signed this offseason to fill a role as spot-starter and backup QB, could be the starter for the opening weekend of 2023.

Producer Denton Day went the other way.

"I think as of right now I do agree with [the Commanders]," Day said. "I think Sam Howell is definetly going to start a majority of the games this season and I think as we transition to the next year he will have been good enough for them to not be in the market for a quarterback so he will get at least two years of being the primary starter."
