This license plate is driving up some big numbers at auction. The No. 20 Delaware plate just sold for $410,000 at Emmert Auction. That’s because the number of tags in the state are associated with political power.
The governor’s plate is No. 1. The lieutenant governor has No. 2 and the secretary of state is No. 3. And the digits go up from there.
These plate numbers were even once traded as political favors, but now they’re more of collectors’ items. A few years ago the No. 6 tag was auctioned off for $675,000.
You have to be a Delaware resident with a state license plate to own one. But that didn't stop bids coming in through from as far a way as Norway.
