Civil rights icon Rev. Jesse Jackson has died at the age of 84, leaving behind a legacy that reshaped American politics, civil rights advocacy, and Black political power for more than five decades.

Jackson, a Baptist minister and activist, first rose to national prominence during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s, working closely with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was present during some of the movement’s most pivotal moments and later founded Operation PUSH and the Rainbow PUSH Coalition, organizations dedicated to economic empowerment, voter registration, education access, and social justice for marginalized communities.

Beyond activism, Jackson broke major political barriers. In 1984 and again in 1988, he launched historic campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination. His campaigns expanded voter engagement nationwide and built multiracial coalitions that reshaped the political landscape, paving the way for future generations of Black political leadership. His 1988 campaign, in particular, demonstrated the growing power of a diverse voting bloc and brought issues like economic inequality and international human rights to the forefront of national conversation.

Throughout his life, Jackson remained a vocal advocate for voting rights, labor rights, corporate accountability, and global humanitarian causes. Whether negotiating the release of Americans detained overseas or speaking out against injustice at home, his influence extended far beyond the pulpit.

According to family statements, Rev. Jackson passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Tributes from political leaders, activists, clergy, and public figures across the country continue to pour in, honoring his courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice.

Rev. Jesse Jackson’s impact is deeply woven into the fabric of Black history and American democracy. His life’s work helped expand representation, empower underserved communities, and challenge systems of inequality. As many reflect on his legacy, one message echoes clearly: the fight for justice continues.
