Sean “Diddy” Combs is back in court today for sentencing after a trial that gripped both the music industry and the public.

This summer, a jury found the Bad Boy mogul guilty on two counts of transportation for prostitution, but cleared him of the more serious racketeering and sex trafficking charges. Each conviction carries up to 10 years, meaning he could face as much as 20 years behind bars.

Prosecutors are pushing for 11 years in prison, while Diddy’s defense team is asking for time served which is about 14 months. We heard from Diddy on all this for the first time on Thursday vis a letter to the judge in which Diddy admitted to past abuse and drug use, calling himself “reborn” and asking for mercy. He’s writes about how he's been teaching business classes behind bars, with inmates writing in support of him.

Judge Arun Subramanian has broad discretion in this case. Diddy will be allowed to speak at today’s hearing and will appear in non-prison clothing. Proceedings are expected to lasts for hours, so there is a chance that the decision doesn't even come down until Monday. Whatever sentence is handed down will likely spark appeals and could reignite debate over how the justice system treats powerful figures.
