CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Ariel Roman, the man shot at the CTA Grand Red Line station by a Chicago police officer Friday, will not face criminal charges as he continues recovery at Northwestern Hospital, according to his attorney Gloria Schmidt Rodriguez.

Schmidt Rodriguez told WBBM that the Roman family is pleased with the State Attorney’s Office and the Chicago Police’s Department’s decision to dismiss all charges.

She said Roman, who faced resisting arrest and criminal narcotics charges, is now out of critical condition but still hospitalized. He is surrounded by his family.

Earlier Sunday afternoon, Chicago Police Interim Supt. Charlie Beck asked Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx to drop those charges against the 33-year-old man.

Roman was shot twice by a Chicago police officer around 4 p.m. Friday inside the Grand Red Line station. Chicago Police Deputy Supt. Barabara West said the officers were attempting to take him into custody after they had observed him illegally moving between train cars.

Cellphone video of the incident went viral on Twitter and shows Roman struggling with two police officers. The video, which sparked outrage, now has 2 million views. The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois slammed “the lack of meaningful de-escalation by Chicago police officers” as seen on the video, and called for a full investigation. At one point, the FBI reportedly stepped in to assist the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office when it was considering "possible criminal charges."

I don't exactly know what to do with this, but I witnessed and recorded the police-involved shooting at the Grand Red Line station in Chicago a little over an hour ago. This is my unedited video. (Trigger warning, obviously.) pic.twitter.com/tIrv1RfTN3
