Warning Sign Along Lakefront

The city of Chicago will have two fewer beaches.

High lake levels, erosion and last weekend's crashing waves have washed away two beachfronts in Rogers Park on Chicago's North Side -- permanently, it turns out.

The Chicago Department of Transportation announced the Rogers Avenue and Howard Park beaches will not be restored. Instead, the city is fortifying the lakefront at those sites with rocks.

Residents say they're sad to lose their beaches. More urgently, they're worried about the thick ice that has formed on their buildings.
