HAMMOND, Ind. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The mayor of Hammond, Indiana is getting in on the fun of April Fool's Day with a nakedly brazen joke.
A news release Monday from the city of Hammond said that a section of the city's lakefront park beach had been designated "clothing optional," starting in late May.
The city issued an amended news release this afternoon that said: April Fool’s.
Mayor Thomas McDermott said he's been working on the idea since last summer.
“I came up with it when I was at the beach,” he said, giggling. “I was joking with my friend, saying, ‘We should do something to increase tourism here. We should go full nudity or something.’ And I brought the room down when I said it, and I was like, ‘Man, that was a good joke.’”
He said most people got the joke, but a few called to complain.
“One gentleman said specifically he did not want to see naked region people,” McDermott said.
