(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is defiant in the face of President Trump’s latest threat to withhold federal aid to cities that he claims are allowing anarchy and destruction.

The Republican president tweeted he would block funding to cities that he says devolve into lawless zones -- an obvious swipe at cities like Chicago that he has long criticized. The president’s threat to tell his budget office to restrict federal grants didn’t discourage Lightfoot.

“We’re going to the be focused on the things that are most important for our residents,” the mayor said Thursday. “But it the president and his team are foolish enough to think that they can unilaterally cut off our funding because we are not bending to his will — as if he is an emperor and not a president who is responsible to the people —once again, we will see him in court.

My Administration will do everything in its power to prevent weak mayors and lawless cities from taking Federal dollars while they let anarchists harm people, burn buildings, and ruin lives and businesses. We’re putting them on notice today. @RussVought45

“And we will win, and when we win we will make him pay for what his foolishness has brought to the city of Chicago.”

A White House spokeswoman said Trump is serious — and cities can bring it on.
