CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Puerto Rico is struggling with numerous earthquakes and shocks that began a few weeks ago and continue as storms wreck the island.
After a 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit the territory Jan. 7, the weekend brought more damage with a 6.0 magnitude earthquake Jan. 10.
The shock from Tuesday's hit came one day after a 5.8-magnitude quake, and was immediately followed by several aftershocks, including a 6.0 tremor three hours later. Saturday morning’s earthquake left 5,000 residents without power, according to the island’s power authority.
Chicago's Puerto Rican community is urging activists and public officials to step up their efforts in helping the island, which is still reeling from Hurricane Maria and other earthquakes.
Chicago's Chair of Puerto Rican Agenda's Health and Wellness Committee Dr. Aida Giachello said now is the time for people to pull together and help, especially for those struggling with PTSD and emotional trauma after going through multiple natural disasters.
"They have been tremendously affected emtoionally in addition to other physical symptoms they may be experiencing," Giachello said.
The organization is raising funds for relief efforts in response to the recent earthquakes on their website.
