CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Thursday announced her selection for a new police superintendent: former Dallas police chief David Brown.

Brown got the nod over two other top finalists identified by the Chicago Police Board -- Chicago Deputy Chief Ernest Cato and Aurora Police Chief Kristen Ziman.

Lightfoot praised Brown's long career in Dallas, rising through the ranks at the police department and even temporarily serving as a city administrator there. She said Brown had considerable success implementing reforms and de-escalation tactics in Dallas.

Lightfoot also praised Brown's leadership during the 2016 active-shooter incident in his city in which a sniper killed five Dallas police officers. She credited Brown for making the decision to have the increasingly erratic gunman killed in an explosion to avoid further loss of life.

The Chicago City Council must approve his appointment. Brown would replace interim Supt. Charlie Beck, who replaced fired superintendent Eddie Johnson.
