(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Fire swept through a dog kennel in DuPage County Monday morning, killing at least 29 dogs, authorities said.

The fire was at D and D Kennels in unincorporated West Chicago.

"This is probably the most difficult thing I've had to experience as a veterinarian for 30 years,” Barbara Hanek, veterinarian administrator for DuPage County Animal Services, told WBBM Newsradio.

"We were able to get 22 live dogs out and they were brought here at the facility where we were able to then do assessments on them, health assessments, and medicate if needed. And then after that we brought back 29 deceased dogs."

Dr. Hanek says six dogs were running loose. All but one had been recaptured by Monday afternoon.

She said private citizens and rescue organizations boarded dogs at the kennel.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
