CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- As coronavirus leads to record unemployment and shortages at grocery stores one charity is stepping up to fill the gap. The Salvation Army is expanding hours at several of its 29 food pantry locations in the Chicago area and northwest Indiana during the pandemic to address the growing need.Salvation Army Spokeswoman Jackie Rachev said their center near Chicago Midway International Airport recently saw twice the number of families come out. Those in need can get pre-packed boxes of food with non-perishable items, fresh produce and dairy depending on the location. Meanwhile, the charity is providing meals to workers at Chicago's 911 Emergency Communications Center and Cook County's Emergency Operations Center, as well as people in homeless shelters in the city.In the last eight weeks, the Salvation Army has also handed out snacks for passengers going through health screenings at the international terminals at Chicago O'Hare International Airport. Rachev said they've distributed about 4,000 meals, 16,000 drinks, 20,000 snacks and 1,000 food boxes. The food comes from its partners at the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Northern Illinois Food Bank and local restaurants.
