CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An investigation by Chicago's inspector general concludes the Chicago Police Department has problems tracking and producing records required in legal proceedings, including cases of police misconduct.

The report found the police department's practices for managing its own records are inadequate to ensure that it can meet its legal obligations to find and produce information requested in court proceedings.

Deborah Witzberg, the Acting Deputy Inspector General for Public Safety, says that includes when police officers are prosecuted or sued for misconduct or when civilians charged with crimes seek information for their defense.

Witzberg said Wednesday investigators found no evidence that anyone at CPD is intentionally withholding required records.

She says the police department, the mayor's office and the Cook County State's Attorney are working to improve the process.
