(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Will and Kankakee counties will be rolled back to slightly tighter coronavirus-related restrictions this week, following a surge in that south suburban region’s virus “positivity rate,” Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker announced Monday.

The two counties, comprising “Region 7” of the state’s 11-region reopening map, have hit a too-high positivity rate of 8% for three consecutive days. That’s nearly twice the statewide positivity rate of 4.2%.

Effective Wednesday, restaurants and bars cannot serve customers inside — and service must end for both types of businesses at 11 p.m.

Non-school gatherings will be limited to 25 people or 25 percent of a venue’s capacity, whichever is less. Party buses will not be allowed.

Illinois government will monitor Region 7 for the next two weeks before determining whether it can return to looser restrictions, Pritzker’s office said.

Also under stricter COVID mitigation measures is “Region 4,” or the Metro East area, which is still grappling with a rising number of cases, officials said.

Illinois on Monday reported another 1,612 new cases of COVID-19 and eight additional deaths.
