As the vaccine rollout has begun across the country, it can be challenging to know whether or not you still need to quarantine.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 do not need to quarantine if they are exposed to the deadly virus, reports NBC News.
The CDC updated its official guidance on its website, explaining how quarantine is usually recommended for people who have come in close contact with someone who has COVID-19. During that period, people are asked to isolate themselves from others for one to two weeks.
However, if you received two doses of the vaccine, the CDC said quarantining doesn’t need to happen within three months of receiving the last dose as long as the person does not have any symptoms. Being “fully vaccinated” means at least 14 days have passed since someone has received two shots from a two-dose vaccine or one shot from a one-dose vaccine.
After receiving your vaccine, you still need to wear face masks, follow social distancing guidelines and avoid large crowds.
The guidance reports that whether or not fully vaccinated people could spread COVID-19 is “still uncertain.”
According to the CDC, “vaccination has been demonstrated to prevent symptomatic COVID-19; symptomatic and pre-symptomatic transmission is thought to have a greater role in transmission than purely asymptomatic transmission.”
A spokesperson for the CDC declined to comment about the updated guidance.
