CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Goodman Theatre canceled its weekend shows of "Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!" after some members of the company were possibly exposed to COVID-19, the company said in a Saturday release.

"Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!" was scheduled to perform at Indian Boundary Park Friday night and Portage Park on Sunday. Performances are scheduled to resume on Thursday, October 1 at 6 p.m at Austin Town Hall, 5610 W. Lake St.

The cancelations allow time for proper assessment, cleaning and testing for the company members, according to the release.

"The production is an unprecedented production in a moment when concern for the health and safety of our artists, staff and audiences has never been greater,” said Goodman Theatre Executive Director Roche Schulfer in a statement.

The show, which is in partnership with the Chicago Park District, featured civil rights anthems, powerful spirituals and relevant political action. Written by Cheryl L. West and inspired by the life of the eponymous civil and voting rights activist, this show "defines what it means to be a true revolutionary," the company said.

"Fannie Lou Hamer, Speak On It!" is free and takes place in a socially-distanced outdoor manner. You can find showtimes at various parks online.
