One person killed, five others hospitalized in South Side shooting

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — One person was killed, and five others were hospitalized after a shooting in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood early Wednesday morning, Chicago police officials said.

A police spokesperson said it happened on South Ada Street near West 56th Street shortly before 5 a.m., when someone opened fire on a group of people who were gathered outside for a Fourth of July block party.

The shooter struck five people, including a 35-year-old man who was hit in the chest and transported to University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

A 27-year-old man, a 21-year-old woman, a 23-year-old man and a 29-year-old man were also shot and taken to local hospitals. All four people have been stabilized, officials said.

Another person, a 21-year-old man, was beaten and hospitalized with injuries to his head.

Chicago police said no one was in custody.

Area One detectives are investigating.
