EVANSTON (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A 13-year old Evanston girl continues to fight for her life after being shot Monday night while spending time with other teenagers.

Evanston Police Commander Ryan Glew said detectives are still working to determine a motive for the shooting of the girl in the backyard of the 1300 block of Fowler.

“The investigation right now indicates that the girl was not likely the target of the shooting,” said Glew.

Commander Glew said the girl was in the yard with other teens when the shooting happened before 6:30 p.m.

“An unknown offender fired several rounds over the fence, striking the victim, but no other parties were injured,” added Glew.

Police are still trying to put together a description of the suspect. Commander Glew said he could not comment if anyone recognized the shooter.

The victim was shot in the neck and taken to St. Francis Hospital. She has since been transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital and was last reported in critical condition.
