CRYSTAL LAKE (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Two tweens were rescued from a storm drain near a Crystal Lake retention pond Tuesday after they crawled in and got lost.
The girls had entered the drain through an outlet pipe that’s mostly covered by a grate but has about a foot-wide gap at the bottom, according to Crystal Lake Fire Rescue. The fire department told the Northwest Herald that they responded to a call at around 5 p.m. behind the Target at Northwest Highway and Federal Drive.
The paper said friends of the girls, who are between 10 and 13-years-old, saw them go in and called adults when they didn’t come out. Battalion Chief Heidi Olsen said the girls made it about 850 feet in before they got lost and their cell phones didn’t work. Consulting with public works to map out the system, the chief said a resident was able to open a manhole and pull the girls out.
The girls were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.
