CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A faith-based social justice group will host a training Sunday to help people respond to gun violence in their communities.

The Leaders Network Chicago is a West Side collaborative of about 20 churches dedicated to community wellness in its many forms. The group is now working to alleviate gun violence on the South and West sides of the city.

Reverend Ira Acree is one of the group's co-founders hosting the training. He told WBBM Newsradio he hopes this effort will help improve community relations with the police.

“Even though we want wholesale overhaul in the police department and we want to deal with many of the flaws that we have in the system, we also know that police, pastors, families, politicians and the school system — we’re all institutions that must partner together if we’re going to really make some real progress in dealing with this violence,” Acree said.

The group also hopes the training will increase participation among people of faith in solutions to violence as well as help churches become better equipped to comfort victims of violence.
