CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Police are investigating a series of armed carjackings on Tuesday afternoon that may have been committed by the same crew.
Armed carjackers, operating in broad daylight with surveillance cameras present, held up people in the West Loop, West Town, and Humboldt Park. They stole an SUV and two cars in a period of about 40 minutes.
According to Chicago Police, three men, two with guns, forced a woman out of her red car at Morgan Street and Carroll Avenue in the West Loop around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday.
Then about 30 minutes late, at 4:12 p.m., a 35-year-old woman was sitting in her parked SUV at Huron Street and Washtenaw Avenue in West Town, when carjackers ordered her out of her vehicle at gunpoint and drove away.
The last carjacking, in Humboldt Park, happened at the intersection of Ridgeway Avenue and Ferdinand Street. Someone’s Nissan Altima was taken by force, police said.
There were security cameras visible near the scene of each carjacking; but it is unclear whether the cameras captured the incidents or whether the same suspects committed each crime.
None of the victims were injured in any of the three carjackings.
Detectives are working to get a better description of the suspects.
There have been more than 600 carjackings so far this year. Last year there was more than 1,400, which is more than double the number that occurred in 2019.
