3 children left home alone seriously hurt in apartment fire in Washington Park

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) --An 8-year-old girl jumped to safety from a third-floor window of a burning home Wednesday night in Washington Park by landing on a mattress on the ground.

Firefighters then entered the home by ladder late Wednesday in the 6100 block of South Wabash Avenue and rescued her younger brothers, ages 2 and 5, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The Fire Department initially told reporters that the girl threw the mattress out of the window herself but corrected the narrative Thursday evening, saying that a neighbor actually laid it out.

Each of the children were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in serious condition, fire officials said.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford told CBS 2 it was a kitchen fire. Fire personnel were able to contain the blaze to one unit, and it was put out.

"Because of the construction of the building, the fire was contained to the one unit; but the children were inside and the smoke was very heavy. The only way they had out was a window," he said.

No adult was at the home at the time of the fire.

WBBM Newsradio spoke to Chicago police who said the children's mother was located and there are no charges.
