Animal shelter starts fundraiser for 43 dogs rescued from hoarding situation in Northwest Indiana

NORTHBROOK, Ill. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- An urgent fundraising alert has been issued by a no kill animal rescue organization in Northbrook, after taking in dozens of dogs from a Northwest Indiana hoarding situation.

Firefighters responding to a house fire Monday night discovered 43 dogs inside the home, Tuesday morning Harleigh Garcia, executive director of Border Tails Rescue in Northbrook received a call from animal control.

She told WBBM that considered a priority among the group of chihuahua mixes, were moms with new born pups and possibly more pregnant.

"As soon I saw the pictures, I was like 'alright it's go time'. We're just going to do it all. We can take all of them and within 24 hours we were on the road to go pick them up."

48 cats were also found inside the home, but were taken to other shelters.
