(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Indiana State Police with responsibility for patrolling interstates in the Northwest portion of the state have tallied drunk driving arrests for last year.

State Police said there were 508 drunk driving arrests last year by troopers from the Lowell Post. That’s a decrease by 18 from 2021.

“That number should not be celebrated. Rather, it should be cause for concern," Sergeant Glen Fifield said.

Another statistic concerns troopers who were hit, either in their cars or while standing on the side of a road.

There were 12 such incidents and in 8 of those cases, the drivers were impaired.

Fifield said state police will be stepping up drunk driving enforcement efforts with local police.

In 2023, you will see a renewed focus by the Indiana State Police Lowell Post in combating impaired driving.
