Six confirmed dead in Amazon facility collapse in Edwardsville

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Officials in Edwardsville have confirmed that at least six people were killed when an Amazon facility collapsed during a tornado strike Friday night, according to Edwardsville Fire Chief James Whiteford.

Recovery operations at the collapsed building site are expected to last for a few more days with searchers running ten-hour operational periods from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Initial reports stated that 45 people evacuated safely from the Amazon site the night of the tornado while one individual was airlifted to a hospital.

Amazon has yet to provide any information on how many people may have been in the facility when it collapsed, which may be because providing that information goes against company policy, Whiteford said.
