CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- COVID restrictions are starting to disappear, and that means more people will be hitting the road over the long holiday weekend.
The end of COVID-19 restrictions on travel and large gatherings means the return of welcome summer traditions, like baseball games and concerts. But it also means the return of bumper to bumper traffic during the long Memorial Day holiday weekend.
The Illinois Tollway estimates that seven million vehicles are expected to use the tollway system Thursday through Monday.
AAA said the worst time for Chicago area drivers to hit the road will be between 2:45 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Thursday afternoon. The group also found that the outbound Eisenhower, especially between Morgan Street and Wolf Road, is the "worst corridor" to use during the holiday weekend.
AAA expects 34.4 million people to travel by car nationwide over the Memorial Day weekend - a more than 50 percent increase over last year.
According to the Illinois Tollway, to help alleviate traffic congestion, construction activity will be restricted on many area tollways over the long weekend, but several work zones could still impact trave.
