(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Moviegoers spent more than $588 million at the multiplex in the month of January, as it appeared more people were returning to the movies.

The box office tracking company Comscore said that's still way behind January of 2019 and 2020, but it’s substantially higher than January of 2022. Comscore's Paul Degarabedian told the WBBM Noon Business Hour that 2023 is off to a strong start.

“We are now looking at a January — and then now into February of 2023 — for movie theaters, it’s just been fantastic,” Degarabedian said.

He said after COVID lull, movie production is ramping up to meet demand..

“Last year in 2022, there were 41 fewer wide-release titles,” he said. “That’s a lot of movies that were released in theaters. This year, we should have some-30 more wide-release titles, so help is on the way.”
