(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Some community organizations are calling on city government and Chicago Public Schools to change the planned location of a new South Loop high school and fulfill promises of new housing there.
The city proposes building the Near South high school at 24th and State, the site of the closed Harold Ickes public housing development. That’s not sitting well with some.
Roderick Wilson of the Lugenia Burns Hope Center says replacement housing should be built. A new school could go in “The 78” community just north of Chinatown.
“We need this administration to hear us, to hear us. Not to have meetings as little boxes to check off. ‘Oh, we did our community outreach. We hosted a meeting. Two people came. Check.’ No. We want you to hear us.”
Beverly Feagins noted the way Mayor Lightfoot is treating former Ickes residents compared to the dozens of migrants bused to Chicago from Texas this week.
A CPS spokeswoman says the 24th and State location for a school is central to all neighborhoods the school would serve.
